Sports betting: a guide to how it works

Terminology, bet types and reading odds. Informational content: bets are placed only on the external operator's site.

No guarantees. There are no safe bets, foolproof systems or guaranteed profits. Any bet can be lost. This guide explains concepts; it does not recommend outcomes.

How odds are read

In Argentina, the decimal format is standard. Odds of 1.80 mean a winning bet returns 1.80 times the stake, including that stake. The lower the odds, the more likely the market considers that outcome.

Odds can also be read as implied probability: divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 4.00 equal roughly 25%. Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and the total exceeds 100%: that difference is the operator's margin, built into the price.

Common bet types

Match result

The simplest bet: home, draw or away. In sports without a draw, only two options.

Handicap

A simulated advantage or disadvantage is applied to one competitor to balance the market. The bet is settled by adding that adjustment to the real score.

Totals (over/under)

A bet on whether a quantity — goals, points, games — will finish above or below a line set by the operator.

Accumulators

Several selections on one slip. The odds multiply, but so does the risk: a single failed selection loses the whole bet.

Live betting

Bets placed while the event is under way, with odds that shift constantly. They call for fast decisions, which raises the risk of impulsive spending.

Common sports

Football

The highest-volume sport in Argentina: the domestic league, international cups and European competitions. Markets include results, goals, corners and cards, among others.

Basketball

High, frequent scoring, with handicap and totals markets widely used across the local league, the NBA and European competitions.

Tennis

One-on-one contests with no draw, and markets by match, set and game. A single match can be highly volatile.

Motorsport

Winner, podium and head-to-head markets between drivers. Retirements and race conditions add further uncertainty.

Other sports

Volleyball, rugby, boxing, mixed martial arts, golf and esports are commonly offered, with market depth varying by operator and event.

Betting responsibly

  • Decide in advance how much you can spend on entertainment, and stay within it.
  • Never chase losses by increasing your stakes.
  • Do not bet with borrowed money or funds set aside for essential costs.
  • Avoid betting while drinking or during emotional stress.
  • Use the limit tools that authorised operators provide.

Frequently asked questions

Do you publish guaranteed predictions?

No. Guaranteed predictions and risk-free bets do not exist. We publish educational information about how odds and markets work, not forecasts of results.

What does odds of 2.50 mean?

It shows how much the market pays for each unit staked if the bet wins, including the return of the stake. It also reflects an approximate implied probability, in this case 40%, before the operator's margin.

Can you make a living from sports betting?

Betting is entertainment with financial risk, not a source of income or an investment. The operator's margin is built into the odds and most users lose money over time.

Where are bets placed?

Only on the authorised external operator's site. Rasca y Gana Casino does not accept bets, does not set odds and does not settle results.
